6th league game and a record score for DV2

Match report
Dundee Valkyries 2nd Xv v RDVC (Royal Dick Veterinary College)
Venue Alloway Place Dundee 15/10/2023
A decent day awaited both sides taking the pitch in the 6th league game for DV2 and the first for RDVC ( always have player issues at the start of the season due to returning or new student vets arrive in October and they rely on these for players)
DV2 kicked off and were immediately on the front foot exerting early pressure on a RDVC side that had 8 brand new players in their starting 15. After only 4 minutes DV2 bagged the first try. After a drive from Nik and two forward pick and goes, the ball was released to the backs and saw Gail Tasker dot down for the first of 10 tries for DV2 DV2 5 RDVC 0
Good defence from the kick off and a resulting scrum penalty for RDVC saw play return to the RDVC half . Finally, after sustained possession for DV2 saw great interplay between backs and forwards ( as we had seen in the previous Leith game ) saw both combine to allow Eve Wood in for the first of her 2 tries. DV2 10 RDVC 0 after 12 minutes
19 minutes saw DV2 stretch their lead as two drives by Blair & Gemma took DV2 deep into the RDVC 22 . Claire Don fed Kirsty Melville who popped the ball to Gail on a great short line to score her second and The DV2 third try . DV2 15 RDVC 0
RDVC had struggled with the DV2 game and the amount of new players but came in to the game via a great break by their backs and their 15 broke through the defence only to drop the ball within 5 m of the Dv2 try line . DV2 then counter attacked with Kirsty then Nik and Olivia all driving on from within the 22 to see the ball end up with Tracy who ran 60 m to score under the posts , DV2 20 RDVC 0. Try bonus secured
25 mins gone and Gemma Watson then got into the try scoring as DV2 attacked from the restart kick off . Forwards and backs combined with a patient phase play which took the side up to the RDVC where Gemma applied the finishing touch from close range. Claire Don added the extras DV2 27 RDVC 0
28 gone and again from the restart, Blair and Gemma W linked and from the resulting ruck the ball ended up with Claire Don who accelerated away from the defence to score Dv2 6 the try. Claire Converted her own try DV2 34 RDVC 0
There was still time in the first half for DV2 to score again when on the restart on 30 minutes DV2 broke through and Olivia seemed to bounced off several tackles to score her first try for DV2, her watching family and friends were very impressed
This meant at half time the score was DV2 39 RDVC
A mightily impressive first half from DV2 that must have pleased coaches Kerr and Lu though as I was dealing VEO issues your reporter cannot tell you what words of wisdom were imparted probably well done more please .
If that was the case the second half began with more good play by DV2 which ended with a Knock on . RDVC finally clicked into gear and quick passing from the resultant scrum saw their fullback dash round the edge of the DV2 defence to score a deserved try from around half way, DV2 39 RDVC 5
Another good break from RDVC saw their backs chip ahead and Tracy blot her copybook by bringing the chasing RDVC player down at the second attempt , Yellow card and due to injuries and player matching it was 14-13 players in favour of RDVC.
The bench was being used however and again great play saw Dv2 go close but stopped by good defence from RDVC on the first occasion and a foot in touch the second.
On 62 minutes however the dam finally broke a turnover by Gail saw the backs take the ball and Zainab score wide out despite the efforts of the RDVC defence. Zainab also scored what she thought was good try at another point in the game but it was the 5 m line oops!! DV2 44 RDVC 5
After 67 from a lineout Kirsty Mckay led the attack and when the ball reached the back Kirsten break through to score > try converted DV2 51 RDVC 5
The last word would be DV2’s .The phase play that had been a feature all game saw Kirsty Melville take it on and feed Eve. Great rucks from the forwards made inroads allowing the ball to go back to Eve who scored her second try . Converted by Claire and a final attack which was bundled into touch left the final score as DV2 58 RDVC 5
A great back to back win for the DV2’S 10 tries spread out between back and forwards speaks volumes of a measured performance where everybody in the squad contributed. Apart from the occasional lapse and having to cope with less players at points in the second half against a spirited RDVC side, DV2 stuck to the task and finished the game strongly.
Onto Lismore this weekend though Storm Babet might have something to say about that.
