2. Morgan RFC Origins (1933 - 1970s)

Monday 18th September 1933, at 7.15m to be precise, is a date and time important to Morgan FP Rugby CLub

It was on that date and at that time that twenty-five like-minded men met in Morgan Academy, under the Chairmanship of the Rector Dr. Leighton. They were there to discuss the proposal by Allan Ramsay, seconded by David Creighton that a former pupils rugby club be formed. The motion was carried unanimously and so Morgan Academy Former PupilsRugby Football Club was born. The Chairman stated that the club will depend on for its existence on the support it receives from each retiring generation of pupils. This statement remained valid until relatively recent times when rugby, in general, seems to be suffering from a lack of players.

Allan Ramsay was elected as Captain, with David Creighton as Vice-Captain and the annual subscription was set at fifteen shillings (75p) for senior members and ten shillings (50p) for Juniors under the age of 19 - that is roughly £40 and £28 respectively in today's money. That's not too far from today's subscription levels, bearing in mind that the players would have to buy their own rugby strips, shorts, and socks.  The choice of club colours and the arrangement of fixtures was left in the hands of the newly formed committee.

The Club played friendly fixtures against others, mainly in the Midlands area but again like others, it went into ambeyance during the Second World War, re-forming in 1946. From then until the 1970s the Club continued to play friendly games against other clubs throughout Scotland.

In the 1960s, Morgan became the first rugby club in the city to open its own clubrooms - in the former skipper bar in Princess Street and retained that as their base until 1980 when the present clubhouse in Alloway Place was opened. The opening was marked between a game between Morgan Academy and a Midlands select.
